1. What are cluster name recommendations?
Clusters are audience segments that are algorithmically determined by Affinio.
The algorithm detects interest patterns among unique members and places members into related clusters.
Traditionally, these are presented in the left-hand navigation of Affinio as Cluster 1, Cluster 2, all the way up to Cluster 20.
Thinking of clusters in human terms is key for strategy formulation.
There are better ways to label a group of people than reducing them to a number.
Naming a cluster requires an understanding of whom the people are and what brought them together. While extremely valuable, the process can be time-consuming or intimidating, especially for new users; and sometimes it's nice to get validation. For that reason, Affinio leverages machine learning to apply recommended cluster names to Twitter reports.
2. How are cluster name recommendations determined?
Affinio suggests cluster names based on a repository of thousands of machine learned labels. A cluster name is only recommended when Affinio matches its interest patterns to a familiar pattern. The minimum pattern overlap is 75% based on a cluster's top 1000 interests. Cluster name recommendations have been filtered for ethnic/religious/health or other controversial labels. Notify support@affinio.com if you come across any inappropriate recommendations.
3. Why are they only available for Twitter reports?
Historically, Twitter has been Affinio's most heavily analyzed network.
4. Can I change the recommended name?
Yes. You can always edit a cluster's name by hovering over it from the left-hand navigation and clicking on the pencil icon.
5. Why didn’t all of my clusters get name recommendations?
It's possible that the cluster didn't match any of the existing interest patterns in our repository. Read "How to Name a Cluster" for best practices.
6. Can I still apply cluster name recommendations if the default preference is turned off?
Absolutely! You can choose to apply cluster name recommendations on a per report basis rather than having them used by default. Click on the pencil icon as if you were going to rename the cluster. You will see the recommendation at the top of this modal. Simply hit "Save" to apply. (Screenshot 2)
7. Can I apply cluster name recommendations on reports generated prior to April 3?
Yes. Simply click on the pencil icon as if you were going to rename any cluster, and select the option to get cluster name recommendations for that report (Screenshot 1). Refresh the report after about 10 minutes, click on the pencil icon in each cluster to find the recommendation, and hit "Save" to optionally apply. (Screenshot 2)
