Affinio offers a direct integration with Talkwalker for those who subscribe to both services. This bi-directional connection enables a variety of convenient options designed to save you time and effort when looking to use the two services together for powerful workflows. Much of the current integration is tied to leveraging Talkwalker’s Source Panels, although other options do exist and more are planned for the future.
See the current automated integration options in action in this demo:
Source Panels in Talkwalker are curated lists of relevant sources (e.g. authors) that you can use to filter Talkwalker results. These sources are custom-compiled by Talkwalker users based on the popularity and activity of specific authors (and less focused on how recently they posted). We recommend that Source Panels be made as large as possible for use in this integration to give the broadest possible audience size for segmentation; ideally leveraging the full maximum eligible count of 1000 authors. Subscribers can have up to 100 Source Panels. Read more about Source Panels.
Note: Talkwalker’s Source Panels section can only be managed by the Account Admins, Project Admins, and users with full access to the Project Settings.

Getting Started with API Keys
For automated workflows, API keys will be required.
To send data from Talkwalker to Affinio, you’ll need an Affinio API key.
To send data from Affinio to Talkwalker, you’ll need a Talkwalker API key.
However this integration is bi-directional, meanting that you can also pull Source Panels from Talkwalker into Affinio from the Affinio account (where you only need the Talkwalker API key to be connected).
In either case, ask your applicable representative to supply them or you can go into your Talkwalker account and navigate to API settings to grab the Read/Write API Token and follow the initial steps in this demo.
How to Get an Affinio API Key
Request access to your Affinio API key by contacting us at help@audiense.com. Affinio API keys work on a per-user level.
How to Get a Talkwalker API Key
An API project and separate package may have to be set up first in Talkwalker in order to receive the API token. Once established, the copyable key can be found under Settings>Accounts>Account Settings>API Settings.
Talkwalker API keys work at a Project level. Only one Project user can enter a key within Talkwalker, but any eligible user in a Project can launch reports with that key.
All Affinio report notifications will be sent to the individual associated with the key, who may need to share the reports to any other Affinio users in their company. However, the Project key could be replaced on a per-user basis. Please note it needs to be the Read-Write API key. More information on Talkwalker API keys can be found at https://developer.talkwalker.com/docs/getting-started/access-token.
Entering the Affinio API Key Within Talkwalker
To unlock “From Talkwalker” use cases, go to Settings>Project Settings>Connected Accounts and look for the Affinio tile. Ask your Talkwalker representative to activate this tile if it is not visible. Once added, it can be managed in the Connected Accounts section, should you choose to delete it and replace it with another user’s. Watch the demo to see these steps in action!
Entering the Talkwalker API Key Within Affinio
To unlock the “From Affinio” use cases, go to the Settings>Integrations. This is the same section where you can set up the Twitter Ads integration. Enter the third-party API key provided by Talkwalker. You can delete it at any time.

Tips & Troubleshooting
How can I increase the size of my Source Panels to ensure I have a large enough audience?
Affinio only considers Twitter authors in its analysis, so try to maximize the number of authors from this source. Also, by default, Talkwalker only shows so many authors at once for Source Panel selection, so include every possible page of results when creating Source Panels. Lastly, by fetching your Source Panels from within Affinio, you will be able to select more than one at a time to enlarge the overall potential audience size.
Why am I getting an error?
The most common causes of error would be:
- We cannot connect to Talkwalker. Example: You have not added an API key, or are using an ineligible or expired API key.
- We cannot find any data for Projects or Source Panels. Example: You may not have created any eligible Projects or Source Panels.
- Your account may not have the required permissions on the Talkwalker side.
- You have already exceeded your limit of allowed Source Panels, Topics, or Filters allowed.
Can I run more than one report using the same Source Panel?
To do this, opt to ‘Recycle’ your initial Affinio report and change some parameter of the query (e.g. number of clusters). Or, opt to ‘Monitor’ the original report in Affinio to get a sense of the changing behaviors within the initially defined clusters (where this feature is available).
Why didn’t all of the selected clusters appear inside Talkwalker?
The number of clusters eligible to be sent is based on your allowed Talkwalker limits. In the case of Source Panels, you will be able to create up to 100, and may wish to delete any that are not being used in order to make room for more. In the case of creating Topics or Filters, each cluster is treated like 2 Topics or Filters so as to maximize the number of available authors. So not all clusters will be sent even if all are selected. It’s common to have at least 10 eligible Topics in Talkwalker, so we recommend not sending more than 5 clusters at a time as Topics or Filters (assuming you don’t already have others in use). You may need to delete any that are not being used in order to make room for more.

Option 1: Launching an Affinio report within Talkwalker with Source Panels
Choosing Option 1
Use this option when you want to conveniently stay working inside Talkwalker without having to log into Affinio to launch a report, you only want to upload a single Source Panel, or you don’t need to apply any advanced filters. This option is great for a basic segmentation and enrichment of a Talkwalker audience.
- These reports will have a maximum audience size of 1000 authors
- A default of 5 clusters will be set which can be modified
Note: Some functionality may be limited to those with Admin access. No extra Affinio-side filters can be added to reports launched this way at this time. If you want to additionally apply handles or benchmarks to your Source Panel, see Option 2. Since Source Panels include a maximum of 1000 IDs across networks, once narrowed down to only Twitter users for Affinio, at least 250 public IDs will need to remain.
Executing Option 1
- Confirm the Affinio API key is entered under Talkwalker’s Settings>Project Settings>Connected Accounts
- Stay within Settings>Project Settings, and go to Source Panels
- Open an existing Source Panel from one of your Topics, or create a new one
- From this Source Panel section, go to the ‘Export Audience Report’ icon
- Name the report as you would like to see it displayed within Affinio
- Confirm the number of clusters
- Launch the report
- Wait for an email notification from Affinio in the usual timeframe
- Log into Affinio to view your report
*Note: By default, the Affinio report will be run using the Source Panel as the audience definition. However, there is a toggle option to ‘Run on followers’, letting you study the followers of the Source Panel members instead of the panel itself.

Option 2: Pulling Talkwalker Source Panels into Affinio’s Report Builder
Choosing Option 2
Use this option when you want to conveniently stay working inside Affinio, you want to be able to select from multiple Source Panels within a Project, and/or you want to apply advanced filters to your audience definition. This option is great when you need to add benchmarks to a Talkwalker audience and/or assess the group alongside any handle-following patterns.
- All selected Source Panels from a Project will be stitched together into a single audience
- The maximum size of the audience will be 1000 authors per each selected Source Panel, with any duplicates across multi-selected panels removed
Note: Since Source Panels include a maximum of 1000 IDs across networks, once narrowed down to only Twitter users for Affinio, at least 250 public IDs will need to remain. It is recommended that any additional Affinio filters be set with the “OR” condition versus “AND” to avoid the audience becoming too small.
Executing Option 2
- Confirm the Talkwalker API key is entered under Affinio’s Settings>Integrations
- Open the New Report Builder
- Select the specific “Your Talkwalker Audience” report type option
- Search for your Project and applicable Source Panels as prompted
- Select the desired Source Panel(s)
- Proceed through the Report Builder stages and apply filtering options as desired
- Launch the report
- Wait for an email notification from Affinio in the usual timeframe
- Log into Affinio to view your report

Option 3: Pushing Affinio clusters into Talkwalker as new Source Panels, Topics or Filters
Choosing Option 3
Use this option when you want to be able to reference an Affinio audience within Talkwalker on an ongoing basis. You can flexibly opt to send one, many, or all clusters as Source Panels, Topics, or Filters. This option is great for the ongoing tracking of Affinio clusters in different ways within Talkwalker.
- Creating a Source Panel in Talkwalker will use a sample of up to 1000 members from an Affinio cluster as a curated list that can be used in Talkwalker.
- Creating a Topic in Talkwalker will treat a list of Affinio cluster members as a “subject” that can be tracked in your project. Topics can consist of up to 4096 characters per line, which should generally allow for the inclusion of about 200 authors. Since we will use 2 lines when creating Topics, you can expect a limit of approximately 400 authors per cluster.
- Creating a Filter in Talkwalker will enable you to drill down your topics by adding the restriction of your selected Affinio cluster members to your topic. The same author count parameters apply to Filters as Topics.
In all cases:
- Audience members from Affinio are chosen by the highest follower count
- New entities will be created in Talkwalker (versus adding to existing ones)
- Each cluster will represent a single Source Panel, Topic or Filter
- Multiple cluster selections can be made and will be automatically organized together:
- For Source Panels, a Panel Group will be formed to organize clusters from the same audience with a maximum of 1000 IDs per cluster (up to a maximum of 20,000 IDs per Group)
- For Topics and Filters, a Category will be formed to organize clusters from the same audience with a maximum of approximately 400 IDs per cluster (up to a maximum of 8,000 IDs per Category)
Note: Extra credits will not apply when creating these new entities within Talkwalker since they are treated as a data import. However, the number of Topics and Filters that can be created will depend on your subscription limit. You may need to delete existing Topics before adding clusters.
Executing Option 3
- Confirm the Talkwalker API key is entered under Affinio’s Settings>Integrations
- Go to Actions>Integrate
- Select the Talkwalker Project destination for the cluster(s)
- Click the checkbox for the cluster(s) of interest; any number can be selected
- Select the single desired format for cluster delivery - i.e. as Source Panel, Topic, or Filter
- Submit the request
- Confirm delivery inside Talkwalker
Note: Clusters sent from Affinio will be named the same way in Talkwalker, only prefaced with the report name. Multiple cluster selections will automatically be grouped or categorized accordingly.

Option 4: Exporting Talkwalker Authors for Upload into Affinio
Choosing Option 4
Use this option when you want to maximize the possible size of your Affinio report audience (including using authors from across multiple Topics), and when you don’t mind manipulating files or configuring a Custom Export type.
- These exports will allow up to 50,000 mentions across sources (per day)
- The downloaded file will need to be reformatted before being upload to Affinio
- Only unique Twitter users are considered, so the ultimate audience size may be lower than exported
Executing Option 4
- Within Topic Analytics, navigate to the desired Topic(s) of interest
- Click on the Results section in the left-hand navigation
- Optionally modify the default Filters as desired (i.e. date range, sentiment, location)
- Click the icon with the 3 vertical dots that sits above the author list
- Choose ‘Export all results’
- Choose ‘CSV’ format
- Ensure ‘All Results’ and ‘Complex’ are set as the sub-options (or use the Custom Export format, if configured, per below)
- Open the saved export file
- Isolate the single required column (“extra_author_attributes.short_name”) by:
- Re-arranging the CSV to position that column as the first column and re-saving, or
- Copying-and-pasting only that single column into a new file and saving as .CSV
- Proceed to log into Affinio
- Click the New Report Builder
- Choose the “Your Own Custom File (CSV Upload)” report type option
- Follow the steps to upload the file
- Proceed through the Report Builder stages and filtering options
- Launch the report
- Wait for an email notification from Affinio in the usual timeframe
- Log into Affinio to view your report
Note: Filtering results by Media Type is not required since Affinio will ignore any non-Twitter authors. However, by applying that filter to your Talkwalker topic before exporting, you will have a better sense of the ultimate unique audience size you can expect. Also, Affinio will automatically de-dupe authors who are listed more than once. To further expand the scope of your potential audience sizes, you can multi-select various Topics at once.
Tip: It is highly recommended that you complete a one-time process to create a Custom Export format under the Talkwalker Settings to establish a “set-and-forget” no-hassle way to perform manual author exports conveniently each time without needing to further prepare the file before uploading to Affinio. Any desired Filters should still be applied first before exporting using this method (i.e. date range, sentiment, location).
Steps for Configuring the Custom Export Format
- Go to Talkwalker’s Settings
- Under Project Settings, click ‘Export Documents’
- Choose ‘+ New Custom Export Format’
- Name the format as “Affinio Export”
- Search the word “short” to quickly find the required author ID column and then select it: extra_author_attributes.short_name
- Drag that required column into the first position using the arrows provided
- Click “Create” to save your custom format
- Find this new format option displayed in the Export pull-down whenever using “Export all results”

Option 5: Exporting Affinio Authors for Upload into Talkwalker
Choosing Option 5
Use this option when you want to maximize the possible size of your Affinio clusters for use in Talkwalker, you don’t mind downloading files, and you know how to leverage the files within Talkwalker.
- Affinio will allow up to 5,000 IDs per cluster (up to a maximum of 50,000 IDs per report)
- Talkwalker support will need to be contacted to assist with upload since this is not currently a self-serve option
- Any limitations on the upload will depend on your account subscription and whether you are using one, many, or all clusters from a given audience
Executing Option 5
- Within the Actions section of a report, navigate to the Export option
- Go to ‘Data Downloads’
- Toggle into the desired cluster
- Choose ‘Members Profiles’
- Download the file
- Repeat for as many clusters as desired
- Optionally stitch the files together to capture the entire audience, or keep clusters separate
- Contact your Talkwalker CSM for assistance with uploading this list as a query using a special tool
